We had a chance to talk to Garage Games’ Tim Aste about Legions, the Tribesesque game they’re using as a technology demo for Torque engine. We didn’t beat much around the bush—we wanted to know about a Garage Games-designed Tribes title.

Aste said that Garage Games had actually been approached by Vivendi (current Tribes license holders) about doing a new Tribes game, but for some reason GG had to turn Vivendi down. Aste also said that Garage Games would make an announcement regarding a new game in the next month, provided they were going to make a game at all.

In the meantime, Garage Games intends to release the Legions work to the community, making it possible to build a Tribesesque game on the shoulders of those who made the first two Tribes titles.

Our impressions of the Legions game demo after the jump.

So, in short, it’s freaking Tribes. Garage Games has no illusions about what they’ve created. Aste told us the demo was tossed together in just about four weeks before the show, mostly as an example to show developers the power of their engine.

But if you clicked that right mouse button, your jetpack activated; if you held down the space bar, you skied down hills. It felt more like Tribes 2 than Starsiege: Tribes, although we were getting some pretty decent speed down the hills (perhaps that’s just because Tribes is in our fingers’ blood).

It didn’t feel totally ready for pla. The triple grenade launcher felt strangely hard to control and it was too easy to crater (although the damage was light). But we’re told network code is working. It wouldn’t be a gargantuan amount of work to turn this into a multiplayer, community-developed Tribes sequel, even if Garage Games doesn’t end up releasing a commercial successor of their own.

has anyone else noticed the Apple Logo :(? and also seeing that GG turned Vivendi down for a new tribes game made me sad, but i guess it may be a pride issue.

Legions, Tribes, or Starsiege, gimme a jetpack and a disc-launcher and I'm playing it.

Actually, I'm thinking about loading my Vengence disc too, been a while since I played it!

from what a I gather, Garage Games turned down the VUG offer because they are interested in independent game development without pressure from an outside publisher

VUG royally messed up with T:V - poor marketing and they completely dropped all support

I am very glad that VUG will not be involved with this project

PS - the apple logo is just on the monitor, I believe that they are probably using an Apple cinema display monitor so that everyone at the booth can get a look. Everything looks cooler on a 30" LCD

Good point Choda, VUGames dropped support for Vengence the same time their promised patch was to be released. I can't beat on them too bad; they haven't completely pulled the plug on the T2 master server yet, so they get the minute crumbs of a kudo!

Don't forget that a large portion of GG employees are from Dynamix, remember who shut them down? I wouldn't do business with VUG either. Pond scum.

OMG OMG OMG

The talk around town the that Legions is not necessarily heading for full game development, but as a tech demo platform that will be released should the community want to take on the project themselves

this is a little bit disheartening because the Tribes community cannot work together to make something nice

but...check out these righteous videos:

http://www.tribalwar.com/~colosus/legions.wmv
http://www.tribalwar.com/~colosus/legions2.wmv

The scale is so much more epic than T:V
it is like moving out of the suburbs and into the wilderness - so much space!

(definitely check out the first vid - it is of the Legions demo, the second is more of a marketing video for the TSE engine)

It'll do just fine as a community project, so long as GG gives it some kind of quality control/direction.
