It becomes survival, and at that point those with the power "win by force". They take what they need to live - food and water. Very very sad and horrible for all the victims, but especially those who have maintained some resemblance of order.

The handling of this relief and response is nothing short of a monumental failure by the entire federal government. I believe they will get ahead eventually, but grieve at the same time for the countless number of innocent people marred by this delay. For too many, it cost them their life...

Surfing the channels, I happened by CNN and saw that they were bringing in some water/food to distribute. THe officer said that they were bringing the first convoy in and then they were going to go back and make more trips to bring in even more. So, it looks like things will turn around (or should) now with the aid and heavy military presence in the town of New Orleans.

It is anarchy, but what do you expect. They are scared, hungry, tired, dirty and they feel left behind to die. Remember a day without water and 2 days without sleep and food is enough to make most people loose it! But the violence, gunplay and roaming gangs are the result of lack of sufficient law enforcement.
Hate to disagree with you DUNNA, but I would expect civility, volunteerism, acts of heroism beyond my comprehension, etc. Those that have contributed to the anarchy do so because they are without morals, ethics and basic human compassion. Law enforcement, or lack thereof, does not give anyone an excuse to participate in violent actions. Why would I be anymore deserving of the things I steal than someone else who might be in a much more serious condition than I am?

Oh well, maybe I have too many utopian viewpoints.....

Let me explain a little. We have laws because even the law-abiding citizens need them. How many times have people been told not to drink and drive, not to speed, not to harrass your neighbors.

Even the most pristine corporations have to maintain sexual harrassment and employee abuse policies to keep their employees from breaking the law. Some are always riding the thin line of breaking the law, and when the system of crime prevention breaks down, and those troublemakers see no credible police presense in sight... lawlessness runs rampant. The evil in your society rises to the surface and its a dog eat dog environment until order is restored.

There are heroes over there. We get glimpses of them, people doing what needs to be done to help those that need it. Some still try to keep their small personal space as clean as posible and try to keep the peace with others around them. Farmers opening stands to feed people not asking for compensation because they have goodness in their heart. But the problem children that need probation officers and a police presence to act like civilized human beings have had a free-for-all.

So when I typed, What do you expect?" That's what I meant. If the Guard was in place, they could've kept most of the disgruntled in check. I don't consider men and women grabbing food and bottles of water from store fronts "Looters" in this event. Most of them are feeding their families the only way they can because our government let them down, remember it's been 4 days since the storm hit.

I consider those rampaging for power with threats of violence, rapists, theft of non-essential items, theft of fellow stranded victims personal items... criminals!

I don't consider people taking essentails to be in any wrong what so ever. But the people loading up their car with beer and plasma screens are sickening.

One question. If this had happened to a largly upper middle class town where the people actively vote would it have taken this long for there to have been a response of help and food and order maintained?

Another question. If all our National Guard troops had been here instead of in the middle east would a lot of what's happened in killings, lootings, careless deaths have happened?

Actually most of the national guard troops are here. Bush hasn't even come close to taking the maximum allowed amount of NG troops to Iraq.

I'm sure the government has a system in their office that calculates the worth of a human life versus the voter count and decides how to procede from there. That sounds logical doesn't it? :-?

I had a thought about the shootings (snipers). At first I called myself an alarmist, but then I thought some more about it. There are terrorist pods hidden all over the US. Is it unreasonable that a couple of individuals decided this would be a good way to make the Americans look even more evil to the world? I know we can't blame terrorists for everything. But I just wonder how much, if anything, they've had to do with it. I mean, if you can have car bombings at a refugee checksite, why not this?

I never actually thought of that, Lady. It's quite possible that this could be happening. Kind of scary to think it could...and sickening to see people prey on a countires misfortunes like this...

Well, I think instead of pointing fingers they should try to get the situation under control. The Guard isn't to blame they cant deploy themselves. It is the federal goverment. I was just watching the news and they said where I live in Seattle Washington,we are known for some earthquakes, they said if we had an earthquake and roads knocked down and everything else we wouldnt see relief for a minimum of 7 days. So in my honest opinion if we can pay every comitee in DC why cant we form one that does us some good. Yes terrorism may be a problem but so are natural disasters. We should be prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the homeland under control. Louisianna and Missisipi is in my opinion a target so we should up the security and work as a nation to get it under control. They say relief for seattle would take 7 days, instead of taking 1 hour lunch breaks they should find ways so it would take less time. I personally would die 7 days without the phone but in all honesty everyone should pull together. Lets not point finger but lets find a solution. We are wasting time that could be used to drain the city or rescue civillians.

I've had the same thoughts. It seems a little odd to me that the levys didn't break until after the storm passed. It's entirely possible that it was all natural, but suppose it was terrorism. What if those individuals who were trying to prevent the levys from being repaired were also responsible for taking them down in the first place? . . . yikes!

And WHY!! rebuild in the same place? If another hurricane doesn't put them under water an act of terrorism certainly could. I just think it's a bad idea.

Well i know this sounds odd, but I live in a simular situation, i live in a large city with 2 very large rivers running threw it.
I own this property, and eva thing here. If the place floods I woudl want to come back here an claim what was mine. Now if the govt. was offering me the prevailing rate, YEs I would sell an move out of here. I have bought and paid high premiums for flood insurance every year. This is the first year I have not had to pay an extra premium becuase the "levees are fixed".....hehehe Do you think I believe that?.....NO was I a levee inspecter for the Northern half of California.....YES. Do i still live here....YES cuase its beautiful. Call me crazy....but I love it here.
I am well aware that u cannot fix levees, even if u cement them over, once they are wet, they can move....i have worked on many levee breaks in this area. just goofy peeps i guess. lots of us live in that situation and dont even know it!...ok what was my point?????? i need a nap!

Yours is some of the best input I've heard on any of my forum boards.
