But I thought everyone was angry at Bush because we went to Iraq to steal their oil . . . ??

Oh well, Phobos is right, we should be focused on the tragedy and suffering right now, and lending a hand if we are able.

Louisanna produces oil, the Major of New Orleans was using that point to get FEMA to keep those Blackhawks tasked to repairing the levees. To keep those pumps, pumping! FEMA and the other agengies started doing their own thing. The Federal government doesn't like taking orders from a Mayor, and the coordination became undone, the disaster became unmanageble, and they were started running around with their heads cut off, possibly due to shock, the magnitude of this thing was just unbelievable.

Our Pres open the fed reserves because with Lousianna down and out, domestic production is down. That is directly tied to our economy, fall is right around the corner and gas is $3.00 a gallon... natural gas and heatting oil prices will affect a lot of us very shortly. I averaged a 400 dollar a month heating bill last winter for a 3 bedroom, 2 story row home in Philly... and my home is weatherized. There were worse cases in this city.

So this disaster will have economic repercussions affectting gas, oil, heat and our national security as well. Jets, copters, tanks, ships, don't run on air. The cost of goods delivered to your supermarkets... etc. If the price is high now, what will happen in a month or two. I'm not looking forward to this winter at all!

The main topic, and my first post was all about lives. Forget the looting, and save lives! Pray for the victims, the law enforcement, the national guard, and the aid workers there to assist. By all means, send money or items to help as you are able to motivated to do so!

I have not, and will not point fingers at any party or individual for the current oil situation. As Dunna wrote early on - it is the result of years of choices and direction the country has taken. No one person, group, or party bears this responsibility. I WILL take a stand this year though - the energy bill passed by the House, Senate, and signed by the president is a JOKE! It is no doubt the result of another sucessful year of lobbying by the oil "industry".

Mach - I too am a free market guy, through and through. One probably cannot tell by my recent posts, but I have been a registered Republican since age 18.

Political affiliations aside oil is not a free market item. A truely free market implies that if prices are raised too high, consumers can simply stop buying the item all together (with or without an alternative) to force prices down. Oil does not fall into this definition. America in its current form cannot function without it --> like electricity and water. Too many life essential items absolutely rely on it - transportation of food, lumber, trash, military, air travel, rail, police, fire, etc. etc. etc. Oil and gas must be purchased, regardless of the cost.

This reliance will take decades to undo, or displace with another system or fuel. Until then, oil MUST be treated as a public utility. Tax the crap out of it like the Europeans do - FINE! Just stop letting the fat oil executives take advantage of the situation to further increase their profits.

Hmmm, maybe I should get an investment group together and buy up all the water supply in North America, then resell it to the public. I promise that I won't mark it up too much... or better yet, how about the air we breathe? You all better start researching water and air alternatives now. ;)

One thing for sure...we don't need any speech writers for the Moose/DUNNA campaign!!! May need a lot of image consultants however.
Probably a lot of bodyguards too, not for President Moose, but for VP DUNNA:

Agent Morris: Is that Snipeye in the crowd?
Agent Woods: Yes, and Floks is in the tree!
Agent Baum: And there's Icedog hiding behind the mail box!
Agent Morris: What are they all carrying?
Agent Woods: Looks like a shocklance sir!
Agent Morris: Red alert! Red alert! Protect Vice President DUNNA's backside at all costs! Repeat...cover VP DUNNA's backside at all costs!

LOL!

Very funny.

Moose made an excellent point.

Here's a thought for you to thrash as you may: I am not as cynical as most when it comes to our reliance on oil for energy. What do I mean? Contrary to the conspiracy theories, I do not believe a fully suitable substitute for oil has been generated in any sort of practical global economic capacity. Nor do I believe that there has been a concerted effort on the part of the oil conglomerates to put down/assassinate, or in any way interfere with the development of such suitable replacements.

Alot of folks seem to think otherwise; solar power, windmills, vegetable based oils, hydrogen cars, etc., etc. It is absolutely true that all of these energy sources exist and function, but there use as a practical substitute for oil isn't there. They all fall short in some capacity of use or another. If you all want to putt around in an electric car that does about 40 mph when the wind is to your back, that's great . . . but try marketing that to the country.

Kinda like the POD in TV. Hmmm, POD or Shrike, POD or Shrike? Hell, I'll take the Shrike any day of the week.

I DO believe that the government for the last 30 years could have done more. More money could have been dedicated to new developments. More attention could have been placed on the situation so that "today" we wouldn't have this problem. More, More, More!

Going back to the vain topic: It is proven here, this is a thread about a horrible tragedy that happened on our soil and it's degenerated into a discussion about people angry at Bush about their oil prices. Take a step back and look at this from a 3rd person standpoint and you'll see it too.
Tis what I am doing. Being from Canada, I care not (well, yet...I mean, I don't understand half of it. And to think, we had Chretien, yet I can't understand Bush) for Bush. I mean, I'm looking at it from a third person, as Phobos said. It's a horrible situation. At least the water crested so that they won't drown.

And to think, some yahoos were shooting at rescue helicopters. I mean, do they have no sense? People are trying to be saved, and you shoot at them? If it was an attempt to tell them "Here we are" they failed, since they halted rescue missions after that.

I have also put myself on a CNN diet...cold turkey without it. Everytime I watch it, my heart sinks, just thinking of all that could be happening. And after the Mayor (that's with a 'y' not a 'j' Dunna ;)) said that the deathtoll may be in the thousands in New Orleans alone...Man, that made it sink lower.

Thanks for keeping the humor alive Stup :D !

Would it be treason for the pres to give the vp a slight shocklance jolt? It could be done frontside to ensure survival. Or is the pres limited to ELF only? :P

Sarge, you caught me... I forgot to spell check, again!

Moose, an investment group has already gone to work on water.

Remember when buying bottled water was a ridiculous idea. Watercoolers were for areas that didn't have plumbing or were inconveinient for installing a line.

I remember laughing with co-workers at people spending cash for bottled water. Then the anthrax scare happened and everyone started buying bottled water like it was beer because tap water was deemed unsafe, even with a filtration system.

As for Stup, my first action as Vice President to order him out of a havok (err plane) at 15,000 feet!

Well Dunna may be a nice guy but him as VP scares me, but not considering economy or oil or anything else what happened was truly a tragedy. I mean looking at bodies floating down the street, it is sad. The only way I could not feel for them is if in that neighborhood someone went to lance dun, water and electric, he wouldnt be the only victim!!!

Long live Dunna!

I'm not sure where to point the blame, but thus far the disaster relief effort has been pathetic. I've heard it was Bush's fault. I've heard it was the mayors fault. I've heard it was the police chiefs fault. I've heard all sorts of things. It's probably a mix of many failures.

The National Guard wasn't mobilized quickly enough. The city police seem ineffective and chaotic. To be fair, some of the victims aren't using their heads either, shooting at helicopters and killing police. All in all this is just a mess.

It basically sounds like anarchy. They should have had the Guard in there right away. Sheesh. I'm on a CNN diet now. :-?

It is anarchy, but what do you expect. They are scared, hungry, tired, dirty and they feel left behind to die. Remember a day without water and 2 days without sleep and food is enough to make most people loose it! But the violence, gunplay and roaming gangs are the result of lack of sufficient law enforcement.

The Guard should have been mobilized, pull troops from other states. The federal govenment botched this thing, local gov doesn't have the resources to deal with a disaster this size. If you have a couple of city blocks flooded or a sink hole then yeah its the Mayor call, but Katrina destroyed a city and the rest of the state needs help too, as well as the other affected areas.

Those shooting at the choppers are looters and criminals, not the average citizens. There are some that thrive in that kind of environment, they feed on the pain and anguish of hard working people!

The newspaper I got today (Toronto Star) had it headlined (in red no less) as ANARCHY. I mean, it's gotten out of hand. As was mentioned, relief has been poor (but only because it wasn't planned out too well) and people have lost it.
