Okay, I've won my first game of Civ IV, albeit on Settler level! I'm really impressed with the changes they've made to the game and the changes they haven't. For those familiar with the old games, a big complaint about Civ 2 and 3 was the corruption. They've balanced this much better by providing better city improvements, world wonders and added national wonders, which each nation can build to help with specific issues in their civilization. They've tied alot of the city improvements to resources which enhance the effect of the city improvement, so owning and keeping the resources is critical. They've also gotten rid of the "build a billion cities to win" strategy through the use of resources and tile improvements. You can actually cause your Civ to crumble by building too many cities in too small of space! Finally, the SOD (stack of death) is eliminated. In the old games you would stack a unit of each type (fortification, siege, infantry, armor, anti-aircraft, etc.) together and when someone attacked this stack, your best unit against their attack unit would step-up and crush them. Now, your best unit will step-up, but any damage done to that unit is spread across all the units in the stack (collateral damage).
Bottom line: I really like the game because what's new is good and what's old is good!
