I think I'll become a "dirty downloader" too. I've been good only burning music I purchased for my own cds, but this has gone too far. I'm not buying another music cd, ever!

I was talking to a friend in a CD/DVD sales during my lunch break... supposedly all cds and dvds in 2006 will be coded to be unusable after burning a copy. Kind of reminds me of the ole "stickers" on rental movies years back.

I must strongly disagree on this. Company greed is more to blame IMO.

Price of gas too high = more drive offs and theft of gasoline. Music / movie price too high = more basement copies and sharing of content. Capitalist society breeds both sides of the fence - more ways for companies and individuals to get rich, and more ingenuity and effort to avoid contributing to it.

Products that can be obtained at fair and reasonable prices will naturally be subject to less theft. Applying this to CDs or DVDs, what is the price of the media? Geee, we all know retail prices CD's go for dirt (under 10 cents / each), and DVDs are not much more (30-40c / each). Using computers, we also know the easy of putting content onto disc - mass production is even easier and cheaper. Do the product written to a CD or DVD, packaging and artwork really add $12-20+ more value? Answer to that obviously varies person to person..., but the "issue" of copies shows how many people answer.

i agree with moose the higher the prices the more theft seems to happen and phobos im guessing you have some downloaded music too but to go as far as to have a disc you paid 15-20 dollars for install SPYWARE and yes no matter what you say its spyware and i don't like it one bit and im going to end up jumping on the bandwagon too thats just too far

I agree with Moose, initially downloads cost some money, however the cost of cds and dvds of music and movies are now outrageous. Instead of the cost of the disc going down after a sufficient period of time, it goes up and stays up for several years.

If they want to continue charging me 13 to 15 dollars for a cd of 16-20 songs, of which there are maybe 3-4 songs worth my attention, then give me the freedom to make my own ringtones out of my fav songs (I now have the capability) and let me do what I want with my own music.

Even with the outrageous prices for music we don't own, almost all my friends and even my sons that download music, they still shell out their cash for legal copies of cds they sdeem worthy. They download to check it out and then buy it.

I'm sorry, the entertainment industry has gone too far this time... I'm not buying another cd until this situation benefits me, the consumer. I used to be leery of downloaders because in my mind, unless I use it as a means to preview media I desire, it was theft. For these Billionaires to plot to install rootkits on unsuspecting pc's of consumers, is a crime. They plan to hack the uploaders, I always knew they were the one's financing spyware and trojans, but rootkits... that's over the top!

If a famous painter makes a painting, the original is worth thousands of dollars. if a print of that image is made, the print is worth only a couple dollars. a 2' x 3' poster of historic artists like van Goh, Monet, picasso, and Dali can be obtained for $10-$15. They are re-productions. They arn't worth much complaired to the original because they can be created over and over and over effortlessly. The major cost of These posters is the printing process. They are a niche market. Not everyone has to have several van goh's prints in their house, and probably doesnt even have a famous painting on their walls.

Today's music artists voices are worth money. The original (aka them performing in concert) is worth anywhere from $60 for crappy seats to a couple hundred for great seats. Their re-productions (the cd's) sell for $15-$20. Their cost of production per CD is probably around $0.25 . If the CD is any good, it is a wide spread market. Most people that hear it and like it will go out and get it. A lot of the musicians are tempory infatuations and 10 years later people wont remember them.

Do you see how skewed the price of cd's is? you are paying for a reproduction. An artist spends a few days writing a song, and then the music industry cashes in over and over and over based on the few days of work. I think it is rediculous. If an artist wants to make money, i say go on tour. Other than that, lower the price of music to a reasonable level

If a company knowingly puts malware/spyware on a private individual's PC they should face the full force of the law.

There are people that have gone to jail and have had to pay huge fines for doing this. Why should a company like Sony be any different.

My question is who will be the first individual to take them to court over this?

We as private individuals shouldn't have to. The government is supposed to be inforcing the law of the land and companies like Sony are no different than the script kidies.
