If the gamers don't respond to the MTV spam (via XFire), then they will start charging. As long as they can get a foot in the door (PC) and influence purchasing trends in their favor, it will remain free.

with the MTV spam just showing on your pc it counts a succesful advertisement no need to click it. I dont see them charging and they do it won't be long until some makes another messenger like xfire and seeing as the product wouldnt be for sale viacom could not seek legal action..

They couldn't anyways as long as none of "their" original code is used. You cannot have a monopoly on software.

i think that the development company would have been smart enough to sign a contract to keep the software free if not it most likely will be handled like trillian and others... pay monthly and you don't have Ads ...WOO!!

you guys have to be ridiculously naive if you dont think they are looking to make a profit off of the most popular game communication software out there. Thats the whole reason why they BOUGHT it. You dont pay for something your not looking to turn over a profit on.

well if it is for profit everyone who likes it now will hate it just as much as people hate fileplanet. And btw Viacom owns neopets why don't they charge for that then? They are making their money off of the ads on xfire and im fine with them doing that because i don't see the ads in game... and lets look into what various game companies are implementing now oh yea REAL LIFE REAL TIME advertisements and advertisements are gonna pop up everywhere just because of the profit an ad can grant you..

They do make money off of it. You ever see those stupid little toys and books in the store with the Neopets name on it? Just because they don't charge a service fee to use it doesn't mean they don't make money off of it. This is an entirely different case anyways.

Besides, if they added a fee to neopets they'd probably lose alot of interest seeing as how it's target audience is below the legal working age in the US.

There is currently nothing out there like Xfire. They can charge whatever they want without worry.

if there were a few EVEN with xfire being the only one out there there would be a new project that can improve off of the disadvantages of xfire. So far Viacom's plans are to just spam the heck out of it with ads for theirnetworks and products as ive said thats fine with me i dont play with my xfire window up all the time. There was an discussion hosted by viacom and xfire.

When they bought XFire, they bought access to a target audience, a demographic. As long as they can influence that demographic they won't need to charge a dime for it.

For instance when you purchase software (games, programs, and/or movies) or hardware; usually their is a questionaire or suvey attached to the item; either on-line or paper form. In the near future on that survey it will ask, "how did you hear about this game, movie or program" when you purchase an item.

If enough people check a box, whether on paper or on-line or purchase items while logged in via XFire... there will be no need to charge a fee for XFire! They will have a lomg list of manufacturers and corporations looking to push their products throught the XFire pipeline, they will pay our fee for us.
