I played on Frostwolf, but moved to Frostmane because of stability issues...

Lvl 56 Tauren Shaman before I just decided the final level grind was too boring... But I went to Tanzania and got left behind in lvling by all the people I knew in my guild, leaving only new recruits I'd never played anything with before.

;p

A lot of people complain about the monthly fees. Some people don't realize the costs involved with an MMORPG, they think they could just buy the game and play it the way it is. But the reason there are monthly fees is because the company has to maintain its servers, pay for bandwith (this eats up a huge chunk of their budget!), tech-support, customer reps, management positions, design of new levels with a team of PC techs, creation of new weapons, skills, armors, etc. etc. So these monthly fees ensure a continual upgrading and retooling process of the original games, making every player rejoice and be happy with the new stuff they get.

Actually, no they could not pay for it themselves. They're not selling the game to people so the company themselves can pay for all of the expenses needed to keep a MASSIVE community up and going. Bandwidth, New content, Server Maintainence, Server Upgrades, User Support.. these all take PEOPLE to provide, and people don't work for free.

Thought I would let you know about how Guild Wars is free. Two methods: selling expansion packs, and maximizing proficiency, especially when it comes to BANDWITH. Bandwith is the great expense that eats up their profits. By minimizing overextension of their bandwith, they are able to keep their costs down. EQ is just so bloody huge that it'd be a nightmare to get to the level of proficiency GW is at. I'd estimate maybe 1 month of downtime, for all servers. JUST to maximize only half the game. A realistic goal would be 4, 5 months (testing, retooling, and whatnot). Hope this enlightens people as to why other MMORPGS are pay to play, and GW isn't. :D

More info available at PC Gamer: the designer and creator of GW himself tells how he manages to unleash an MMORPG with no monthly cost. (EFFICIENCY)
