This article hits closer to home than you can even imagine. I've worked in mental health for, um, a really long time now. Name your crazy story, I've seen it ALL. From the incredibly sad to the hysterically funny, the brain is limitless, and often times frightening in it's scope.

Aside from a solid case of PTSD, here is the precious knowledge I've gained navigating the waters of imbalanced neurotransmitters: As long as you think you are going crazy, you're fine. It's when you insist that you're not crazy that you've got problems. Can't tell you how many people I've had backed into quiet rooms, or even held down against their will screaming the whole time "I'm not crazy, you all are the ones that are crazy..........."

Must be an interesting perspective on the other side of that needle.....

I've had experience with manic depressives, I even have a couple co-workers that were taken from the office via paramedics because they hadn't taken their medication. It's a sad sight and totally embarassing for the person that temporarily lost their bearings. The worst part is the isolation they suffer after the event, like it's contagious. I am in a cubicle next to one woman that suffered an episode; she's not the friendliest person in the world but she has been very kind and I still converse with her.

That's the worst part about mental illness, the social stigma that goes with it. In this society, we seperate mind from body. It's OK for your body to get sick, but if the mind gets sick, ewww get away!

People don't realize that mental illness is the same as a physical illness. It's a chemical imbalance, or a structural error in the way the brain is built. Diabetes is a chemical imbalance. Arthritis is a structural error.

But in our society, we are expected to be able to control what goes on in our brains, and that's about the most unrealistic expectation western society holds, that we have control. When we are depressed, we're told to buck up or snap out of it. Anyone who's been there knows it's not that easy, because you can't just snap out of a state of depleted brain chemicals. Anyone's who's bipolar or schizophrenic is viewed as someone who can't control their minds, and by definition become outlyers of society.

Things like Cancer and AIDS are horrible ailments granted, but to me, the most frightening illness of all is mental illness. At least Cancer and AIDS will kill you when they are done ravaging your body. The only way mental illness kills is by the victims own hand, after our limited treatments have failed, and the illness has ravaged both mind and body.

And all you can do to avoid it, is hope to god you don't get it. There is no one person in the world who is more or less at risk to develop imbalanced brain chemicals. We know no avoidable cause, aside from stress (cough cough). Genetics play a role, environment, childhood experiences, social connectedness, and random traumatic events are all risk factors. Oh, and the alcohol gene. Ask any random person you meet if there is any mental illness in the family, and not one of them won't chuckle about crazy aunt so and so, or the inevitable alcoholic grandfather, or silently question their own sanity...

Ok, ok, soap box away. All of that being said, some of the funniest things I've ever heard in my life have been spoken by "mentally ill" people. A lot of the funniest things I've seen too. I mean one of the biggest intellectuals I know can't decide if he's god, or jesus, but either way he wrote the bible and has been alive since the time it was written. "You see, you'd have to have lived that long to really get the messages that are written in the bible. You would have to see how society has evolved into what it is today. Modern society doesn't get it yet. Modern society is teaching our children all the wrong things."

Hey, I can't argue with that...
